What makes silk so special?
Perhaps the most fascinating thing about silk is that the thin silk thread is spun by a tiny caterpillar itself. The resulting cocoon serves as protection for the caterpillar—from rain, wind, cold, heat, and predators. Within this protective cocoon, the caterpillar completes the fascinating metamorphosis into a butterfly.
This function of the cocoon also explains the characteristic properties of silk:
- Silk cools in the heat (more than viscose) and warms in the cold (more than cotton) - here is the explanation from the MAX PLANCK INSTITUTE
- Silk can absorb about 30% of its own weight in liquid without feeling damp. This makes it
It counteracts excessive sweating and allows the skin to breathe. - Nevertheless, it does not dry out skin and hair.
- It even has a nourishing effect.
- Thanks to its smooth surface, it is dirt-repellent and insensitive to odors.
- Silk is very tear-resistant – five times stronger than steel.
- It has the highest elasticity of all natural fibers
Why is silk so good for our skin?
Silk is very similar to skin in its chemical structure and is therefore particularly skin-friendly, also ideally suited for allergy sufferers.
Silk has been proven to be antibacterial and anti-inflammatory, thus having a soothing effect on irritated and sensitive skin.
Naturopathic practitioners recommend silk, especially for skin conditions like eczema and psoriasis. Silk has been proven to soothe irritated skin and accelerate wound healing. This is primarily due to sericin (the silk gum that also holds the cocoon together). The high sericin content in bourette silk has a particularly skin-soothing and anti-inflammatory effect. Therefore, bourette silk is especially popular for diapers, nursing pads, and baby clothes.
In a scientific study ( Acta Biomaterialia , 2012), silk proteins showed very good skin compatibility and supported the natural regeneration of the skin surface in the laboratory.
