What makes silk so special?
Perhaps the most fascinating thing about silk is that the fine silk thread is spun by a small caterpillar itself. The cocoon it creates serves as protection – from rain, wind, cold, heat and predators. Inside this protective cocoon, the caterpillar undergoes its fascinating metamorphosis into a butterfly.
This purpose of the cocoon also explains silk's characteristic properties:
- Silk cools in heat (more than viscose) and warms in the cold (more than cotton) - here is the explanation from the MAX PLANCK INSTITUTE
- Silk can absorb approximately 30% of its own weight in moisture without feeling damp. This makes it pleasant aid against excessive sweating while allowing the skin to breath.
- In doing so, it is gentle on skin and hair without drying them out.
- Thanks to its smooth surface, dirt is less likely to cling to it.
- Silk inhibits odour formation through its natural sericin content, which counteracts bacterial growth.
- Silk is extremely strong – comparatively speaking, five times stronger than steel.
- It has a natural elasticity and tends to return to its original shape after stretching.
Why is silk so good for our skin?
Silk is related to skin in its natural, protein-based composition – making it particularly pleasant in direct contact with the skin, even for sensitive skin.
It is also appreciated by those with house dust mite allergies: its dense fibre structure offers dust mites significantly less habitat than many other textiles.
Unlike many conventional textiles, our natural white silk contains no formaldehyde and no synthetic dyes. Where colour is used, this is done as gently as possible.
Bourette silk in particular is appreciated by those with sensitive skin: its high sericin content inhibits bacterial growth and thus helps prevent odour formation. For this reason, Bourette silk is especially popular for nappy and nursing inserts as well as baby clothing.
In a scientific study (Acta Biomaterialia, 2012), silk proteins demonstrated excellent skin compatibility and supported the natural regeneration of the skin surface under laboratory conditions. View Study (PDF)

Queen of all Natural Fibers - Why is silk still so popular?
The most beautiful of all fabrics are made from silk. You find it in exquisite wedding gowns, elegant dresses by designer brands, in the accessories department for scarves and shawls, as well as in bedding and care products.
For the hair: Silk's fibre structure has a very smooth surface, making it soft and silky. Especially when processed as smooth satin, it allows hair to easily glide over a pillowcase. Thanks to its minimal resistance, it can help reduce hair breakage and split ends.
For clothing: Silk offers the most beautiful and natural lustre of all fibres. Compare a polyester organza wedding gown with a silk organza wedding gown and you will understand what royal quality means. It is a true joy to experience the incomparable drape and lustre of silk in an enchanting dream dress. Dyed, painted and printed, silk displays an incomparably brilliant colour vibrancy.
Our silk is doubly special: as cruelty-free Peace Silk and because it is produced without harmful chemicals - gentle on skin and the environment.
